Hair Transplant Scar Repair
There are various reasons you may have a scar on your scalp, such as an injury, an accident, or a scar resulting from a hair transplant. Scars on the scalp, beard, or eyebrows can often be effectively hidden using hair transplant surgery.
In this article, we will concentrate on scar repairs through hair transplant procedures. We will cover who is an appropriate candidate for these repairs, how the procedures work, their associated risks, and the necessary aftercare.
Can I Receive a Hair Transplant on Scar Tissue?
Yes, it is possible to implant hair follicles into scar tissue; however, the process can be more challenging due to a lower blood supply and less supportive tissue in these areas. Nevertheless, hair follicles transplanted from a donor site into a scar can gradually grow over a period of about 12 months, helping to camouflage the scar.
The limited blood supply can impact both the rate of hair growth and the survival likelihood of the grafts. The effectiveness of a hair transplant in concealing a scar largely depends on the type of scar present, as blood supply can vary significantly. Therefore, there is no guarantee that a hair transplant will completely hide the scar.
Am I a Candidate for Hair Scar Repair?
Determining whether you are a suitable candidate for hair scar repair involves several considerations. For instance, if you have an inflammatory condition, it is generally recommended to wait at least five years of inactive disease before undergoing the procedure. This ensures that conditions such as lichen planopilaris, psoriasis, and discoid lupus erythematosus are not active during the surgery.
Additionally, certain types of scars may disqualify you from being a candidate for hair scar repair. For example, if the scar is hypertrophic (too thick), the blood supply in that area might be insufficient for the grafted hair to grow and thrive properly.
During an initial consultation at our clinic, you will have the opportunity to discuss your eligibility for hair scar repair and any cosmetic concerns with a qualified surgeon.
